Alcohol and Alcoholism
Alcoholism is probably one of the harder addictions to deal with. First because it's a legal substance, and secondly because it affects everybody differently. I know some people that can drink heavily, stay happy, and lead productive, successful lives. On the flip side the some substance can make some people angry, lazy and unsuccessful.
With some drugs it's easier to see the basic family of drugs a person is taking by how they act, with alcohol you can feed the same amount to a few different people and get that many different kinds of drunks. Some turn in to the life of the party, joking and laughing and having fun, the other will want to fight everybody.
If you are dealing with a mean drunken adversary, the one good thing is they really don't act wisely, lack serious coordination and really are just in general unaware of their surroundings. Whereas a meth head can become very strong, have hyper-awareness due to increased paranoia and have no pain reflexes, drunks tend to be very slow witted, and very uncoordinated, so in a physical confrontation are typically not a threat as much as just a pain in the butt.
When it comes to physical confrontations with a drunk, be aware that even the smallest cut of the skin can lead to incredible amounts of blood due to a serious thinning of the blood. Many times cuts and scrapes can look much worse than they really are, and remember in todays world, blood is scary, you don't know what diseases these people have.
So, the bottom line is a drunk isn't really something to worry about from a physical point of view if you are sober, but if they are chronic drinkers, they may be that same small problem over, and over, and over again.
